Reading is an amazing way to stop thinking about yourself for five minutes or even more minutes, depending on how long you read. Since I’m sadly obsessed with myself, I’ve often taken pleasure in reading what both critics and fans alike are calling “books.” I’ve grown to love books so much that I even wrote one. It’s a collection of poems called God I Feel Modern Tonight and it wouldn’t exist had I not been inspired by countless other funny, fabulous women who also had the amazing idea to write a book. Here are some I’d recommend reading if you’re looking for a respite from your own thoughts. That being said, there’s no shame in being obsessed with yourself—I mean, who are you around more than you? Obsession with anyone else would simply be creepy.

Did you know many of the greatest thinkers of our time wrote while eating breakfast in bed or getting drunk in the bath? As I tell myself every morning in the mirror, you are not uniquely fucked. 😊

I read this book on a plane and it fucked me uuuup. It is truly a gorgeous gut-punch. All my gals (of all genders) must read this beautiful memoir written for all of us who just want, as Levy puts it, everything.

Obviously, there’s nothing more obnoxious than laughing aloud while reading a book on the subway (we get it, you’re a clever little bitch!!!) but I could not help myself when I found this absolutely hellish and hilarious memoir. I’m fully addicted to Lockwood’s beautiful, twisted, and poetic brain.

Sure, I’m recommending this book because I have a poem in it, but so do so many other brilliant writers whose work kept me cozy during the hell that was 2020 and also, say it with me, 2021. Read this and feel like you’re getting that big hug we all so desperately need.
