Non-Spoiler Book Review

WOW. just… WOW.

This wasn’t a book. This was an experience.

Skyward is a heart-pounding adventure that will make you feel like a star fighter. I was completely swept up in this incredible world and colorful characters. I laughed out loud. I worried. I smirked. I teared up. In short, I lived it.There is no higher praise for a book.

The best part of the journey is getting to see Spin grow to understand who she really is and what’s she’s made of outside of her father’s shadow.

It’s a story about understanding true strength and courage and not letting other people define that for you.

It’s about being bullied and rising above other people’s expectations of you – not to shove their faces in it – but to ascend to a higher purpose. True freedom.

If you are on the fence about reading this book or not, climb into the cockpit and take it for a spin. This is my first time reading a book by Brandon Sanderson, and I know it’s the first step on a long and wonderful journey.

Book Description

Since she was a little girl, she has imagined soaring skyward and proving her bravery. But her fate is intertwined with her father’s–a pilot himself who was killed years ago when he abruptly deserted his team, leaving Spensa’s chances of attending flight school at slim to none.

No one will let Spensa forget what her father did, yet fate works in mysterious ways. Flight school might be a long shot, but she is determined to fly. And an accidental discovery in a long-forgotten cavern might just provide her with a way to claim the stars.

Quotes from Skyward

“So . . . ,” I said. “You’re saying that by the end of our training, you expect us to be able to use grappling hooks made of energy to smash our enemies with flaming chunks of space debris?”
“Yes.”
“That . . . ,” I whispered, “that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.”

“We must not cower in the dark because we’re afraid of the spark within us. The answer is not to put out the spark, but to learn to control it.”
